Welcome to the first e-newsletter of the EU funded program on Port Security and Safety of Navigation in Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean Region (EU PSP).

The purpose of this newsletter is to inform different stakeholders connected to the maritime domain in the nine beneficiary countries namely Angola, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles and Tanzania, about the continuous efforts of the EU to protect the maritime domain.

But it is also key to ensure that people become aware about the importance of protecting the ports of the EA-SA-IO Region from threats and illegal activities, to ensure that merchant vessels not compliant with safety of navigation standards are effectively inspected and detained and to ensure that goods and passengers are monitored when crossing borders.

I am conscious about the difficulties of the countries in achieving the aforesaid results but rest assured, dear reader, that there could not be better institutions (namely IMO, INTERPOL and UNODC) to accompany you along this long path, under the overall coordination of the IOC.
