The Annual General Meeting of the FPAOI has been a pivotal event for professionals of artisanal fishing in the region. Participants from the member countries of the FPAOI — namely the Union of the Comoros, Réunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles — have attended this assembly, which took place from the 10th to 12th of July 2023 on Réunion island.

During the meeting, the president of the FPAOI, Mr. Keith André, along with representatives from various institutions discussed the future of this industry. The Minister for Fisheries and Blue Economy of Mauritius, the Honourable Sudheer Maudhoo, even gave a speech remotely.

The FPAOI delivered a presentation highlighting its members and objectives. This was followed by a captivating slideshow focusing on its accomplishments between 2015 and 2023. The participants also had the opportunity to visit different sites related to small-scale fishing in Réunion island.

On the second day, the conference addressed different key topics: fishing control; maritime safety; the environment; and the economical aspect of the industry. Detailed presentations were made on the Regional Fisheries Monitoring Plan (PRSP), the maritime fluxes in the Indian Ocean, and other relevant topics. The day ended with a series of discussions and lectures, notably the launch of the FPAOI website and a presentation of the industry partners. Members of the COMEX also held bilateral sessions.

The final day was dedicated to annual sessions of the general assembly, featuring presentations on moral, activity and financial reports. Discussions regarding amendments to the Articles of Association and regulations were held.

This event provided a unique occasion for the professionals of artisanal fishing to share their knowledge, discuss challenges and opportunities, and reinforce bonds within the FPAOI.
